The College Football Playoff selection committee, known for its challenging job in sports, will face an even tougher task next season with the expansion of the FBS postseason tournament from four to twelve teams.
To meet this challenge, the committee has brought in a seasoned coach.
Mike Riley, former coach of Oregon State and Nebraska, will join the CFP selectors next season, the committee announced on Friday.
“We are excited to welcome Mike to the committee,” said CFP executive director Bill Hancock. “With his extensive experience as both a player and coach, along with his passion for college football, he will offer a unique perspective. And, he’s a genuinely wonderful person.”
Riley, aged 70, most recently coached the USFL’s New Jersey Generals from 2022 to 2023. He had successful stints with Oregon State from 1997-1998 and 2003-2014, and then with Nebraska from 2015 to 2017.

His career win total of 112 places him among the top 150 all-time winningest coaches, according to College Football Reference. Four of his teams, all from Oregon State, finished in the AP top 25.
Riley will be taking over from Pat Chun, who left Washington State to become Washington’s athletic director in March.
