Former Notre Dame wide receiver Tobias Merriweather is back in the transfer portal after a brief stint at California, where he battled injuries throughout the 2024 season. Merriweather spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Fighting Irish, appearing in 19 games and totaling 15 catches for 325 yards and two touchdowns.
In his lone season at Cal, he added 11 receptions for 125 yards and a score. With one year of eligibility remaining, Merriweather will look for a new opportunity to finish his college career. A native of Vancouver, Washington, he also holds a unique place in Notre Dame lore due to an unintentional yet memorable moment during his time in South Bend.
Tobias Merriweather’s Memorable Vist from Brian Kelly and Notre Dame Staff
Shortly after Notre Dame wrapped up its 2021 regular season with a win over Stanford, members of the coaching staff stayed on the West Coast to do some recruiting. One of their final stops was at the home of Tobias Merriweather and his family. Head coach Brian Kelly and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees were among those who made the visit, enjoying a spread that included burnt ends, deviled eggs, and other dishes during a relaxed, two-and-a-half-hour visit.
Everything seemed to be going smoothly—except for one odd moment when Kelly stepped away for a 15-minute phone call. That call, it turns out, was a pivotal one. Mere moments after the coaches left the Merriweather home, news broke that Brian Kelly was leaving Notre Dame to become the head coach at LSU.
Merriweather would go on to sign with Notre Dame, spending two seasons there before transferring to California. Now, he’s on the move again with one year of eligibility left. Wherever he ends up next, it’s safe to say it probably won’t be Baton Rouge.
