Wild Rising Star’s Momentum Halted by Health Challenge

The Minnesota Wild made a surprising lineup change heading into the third period. After Filip Gustavsson guarded the net for the first two periods, Marc-Andre Fleury took over in goal for the final frame. The team later announced that Gustavsson could not continue due to illness.

Filip Gustavsson had stopped 23 of 25 shots over the first two periods and had been the Wild’s go-to netminder throughout the opening four games of the playoffs. The 26-year-old held a 2-2 record in the series, posting a .919 save percentage and a 2.58 goals-against average.

With Gustavsson sidelined due to illness, veteran Marc-Andre Fleury took over in goal to start the third—facing one of his former teams, the Vegas Golden Knights. The 39-year-old, playing in what’s expected to be his final NHL season, went 14-9-1 over 26 regular season games.

The Wild trailed 2-1 entering the third, but Matt Boldy quickly tied the game before the Golden Knights managed a single shot on Fleury.

Every time Fleury hits the ice now carries added significance, as it could mark the end of his storied career. His appearance in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs is his 18th postseason run—setting a new NHL record for most playoff appearances by a goaltender.
