13-year-old Minnesota phenom Sparks Gophers’ Recruiting Surge

Is it chance or destiny? Shortly after Paige Bueckers, a former Minnesota girls basketball star, was picked first in the WNBA draft, another young talent from the state is gaining attention with scholarship offers from Big Ten schools.

Who’s the rising star? Meet 13-year-old Ashlee Wilson. The seventh-grader from Hill-Murray recently shared that she’s received scholarship offers from Minnesota and Iowa.

Ashlee Wilson, a 5-foot-10 seventh-grader, averaged 13.8 points per game for Hill-Murray’s varsity team last season, trailing only her sister, Mya Wilson, the top-ranked player in Minnesota’s 2027 class. Both sisters have earned scholarship offers from the hometown Minnesota Gophers.

Playing for All-Iowa Attack on the AAU circuit—known for producing Caitlin Clark—Ashlee is already making waves. With one more year of middle school before fully joining Hill-Murray, she’s seen as Minnesota’s next big prep star, following in the footsteps of Paige Bueckers and other elite recruits like Liv Bell (Florida), Olivia Olson (Michigan), Maddyn Greenway (Kentucky), and Tori Oerhlein (Minnesota).

The Gophers’ roster, featuring local talents like Mara Braun, Amaya Battle, and Taylor Woodson, needs an NCAA Tournament berth to elevate the program and boost its appeal to keep stars like Wilson, who’s likely to have her pick of top national programs by her senior year.

For context, Bueckers received her first scholarship offer at 14, while NBA veteran Tyus Jones got his first college letter at 13, when he was an eighth-grader starting on Apple Valley’s varsity team.
