Anonymous NFL Exec Makes Wild Claim on Vikings QB

After months of debate over quarterbacks like Sam Darnold, Aaron Rodgers, and Kirk Cousins, the Vikings’ QB situation is now clear. J.J. McCarthy, the 22-year-old who recovered from a meniscus injury last August, is the undisputed starter. Sam Howell, acquired from the Seahawks during the recent draft, is the backup. Brett Rypien and Max Brosmer are vying for the third-string role.

But one anonymous NFL executive, quoted in Mike Sando’s The Athletic article (subscription required), isn’t sold on McCarthy. Skeptical of the former Michigan star, the exec boldly predicted: “J.J. will get injured, and Howell will step in and shine like Sam Darnold did.”

That’s a stretch. Howell showed flashes of potential as Washington’s starter in 2023, but comparing him to Darnold—beyond their first names—is a reach. Darnold, taller and a former No. 3 overall pick, outshines Howell, a fifth-rounder who led the league in interceptions and sacks taken in ‘23. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell, known for developing quarterbacks, is focused on McCarthy, not Howell.

Another executive in Sando’s piece dismissed the comparison: “No way. J.J. will be great, and O’Connell will ensure it.”

McCarthy’s meniscus injury doesn’t raise concerns about future knee problems, and even if an injury occurs, Howell replicating Darnold’s near-elite 2024 performance is hard to fathom. McCarthy is the Vikings’ guy, backed by his team and ready to lead. Any doubts can be brushed aside.
