Pirates Reveal Signing of Top CAA All-Rookie Star

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina Men’s Basketball has signed point guard Isaiah Mbeng, the team announced Thursday.

Mbeng joins the Pirates after earning CAA All-Rookie Team honors at William & Mary, where he averaged 5.7 points, 3.4 assists, and 1.5 steals across 32 games. The Potomac, Md. native led his team with 110 assists and 48 steals, averaging just 19 minutes per game. Among freshmen nationally, he ranked fourth in assists per 40 minutes and seventh in steals per 40 minutes.

“Isaiah is a phenomenal young man who perfectly fits our style of play,” said head coach Michael Schwartz. “He’s a three-level scorer, an excellent passer, and creates opportunities for teammates. He’s only beginning to show his potential. With his high basketball IQ, strong work ethic, and competitive spirit, he’s a great addition.”

Before William & Mary, Mbeng played a post-graduate year at Prolific Prep after graduating from Winston Churchill High School. As a senior at Churchill, he averaged 17.9 points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals per game, earning a No. 13 ranking in the DMV area (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) by Prep Hoops.

His performance led Churchill to a county championship and secured him first-team all-county, all-division honors, and a Washington Post All-Met Third Team selection in 2023. In 2022, he helped Churchill win county and region titles and reach the Maryland 4A state final.

Mbeng’s brother, Bez, a former Yale standout, was a two-time Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year and Yale’s all-time steals leader.
