The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to begin a new series against the New York Mets on Monday night at Citi Field. Holding the worst record in the National League Central at 14-27, the Pirates recently dismissed manager Derek Shelton.
Despite their struggles, Pittsburgh still boasts one of the league’s most exciting talents in starting pitcher Paul Skenes, who is scheduled to take the mound Monday. According to @OptaSTATS, Skenes enters the game carrying a notable piece of history with him.
The @Pirates’ Paul Skenes made his 15th career road start in St. Louis last week. He owns a 1.36 road ERA, the lowest ERA by an MLB pitcher through their first 15 road starts all-time (since ER first tracked in both leagues in 1913).
Paul Skenes, the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft, burst onto the scene last season with an impressive rookie campaign. He tallied 170 strikeouts over 133.0 innings, earned the starting nod in the All-Star Game for the National League, and finished third in the NL Cy Young Award voting.
Although his win-loss record this season stands at just 3-4, Skenes has maintained a strong 2.77 ERA, with 47 strikeouts in 48.2 innings over eight starts.
Monday night’s game is set to begin at 7:10 p.m. ET, with Skenes facing off against Mets left-hander David Peterson. Filling in for injured starters Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea, Peterson has delivered consistency for New York, posting a 2-2 record and a 3.05 ERA. The Mets currently sit at 26-15.
