Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver Justin Jefferson is thrilled about the opportunity to compete for the United States at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
When asked about NFL players potentially dominating the Olympic flag football roster, Jefferson acknowledged the advantage of those who regularly play the sport, emphasizing their deep understanding of its nuances. He also offered a reality check to Team USA quarterback Darrell Doucette, who had claimed to be better than Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes.
“Those guys who play flag football daily know the game inside and out. It’s not just going to be all NFL players, and with so many positions and limited spots, not everyone will make it,” Jefferson told NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on May 20. “It’s going to be tough to outshine Patrick Mahomes for the starting quarterback role. Good luck—that’s a tall order.”
Darrell Doucette, who played receiver in the celebrity flag football game at the 2025 NFL Pro Bowl Games, called it “disrespectful” to assume NFL players would dominate the Olympic flag football roster. He boldly claimed superiority over Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes, citing his own game IQ. “I feel like I’m better than Patrick Mahomes because of my IQ of the game,” Doucette told TMZ in August 2024. “I know he’s the best in the league, more accurate, with great intangibles, but in flag football, I feel I know more than him.”
Mahomes responded lightheartedly with a meme questioning his involvement. As the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics approach, where flag football will debut, this debate could become reality. However, players like Mahomes, who will be 32 by then, might prioritize self-preservation over participation. It’s also uncertain whether Vikings star Justin Jefferson will ultimately compete for Team USA.
