The New England Patriots‘ 2025 NFL Draft class has received widespread praise, but their fourth-round selection of safety Craig Woodson raised eyebrows. Many felt the California Golden Bears player was picked earlier than expected.
The choice was surprising given the Patriots’ solid safety duo of Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers, suggesting little need at the position. However, insider Phil Perry reports that Woodson has impressed early on, with the team praising his football IQ and movement skills, as noted on the Patriots Talk Podcast.
Could Woodson see playing time as a rookie? It’s possible, as teams often use three safeties simultaneously in modern defenses. Still, as a rookie, the Patriots are likely to ease him into action. Their decision to draft him early on Day 3 indicates strong belief in his potential.
Woodson, 24, played six years at California (2019–2024), recording 70 tackles, two interceptions, and nine passes defended in his final season. Over his college career, he amassed five interceptions, 18 passes defended, and showcased notable run-defense skills.
It remains to be seen how much Woodson will play in his first year and whether he can secure a long-term role with the Patriots.
