Roquan Smith Snubbed in Linebacker Rankings Despite Elite Production
Baltimore Ravens star linebacker Roquan Smith may take issue with his placement in a recent ranking of the NFL’s top off-ball linebackers.
While many consider Smith among the very best at his position — if not the best — a new list by Pro Football Focus’ Mason Cameron ranks him fourth overall, citing a slight dip in early-season performance during 2024.
Since arriving in Baltimore via a mid-season trade in 2022, Smith has been a defensive powerhouse. Over 41 games, he’s posted impressive numbers: 398 total tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 15 pass breakups, 3 interceptions, and 2 forced fumbles. He’s also earned first-team All-Pro honors three years in a row.
Cameron noted that Smith’s lower 66.8 overall PFF grade in 2024 might seem concerning at first glance, but pointed to changes in the defensive lineup as a key factor. Once Kyle Hamilton returned to safety in Week 11, Smith rebounded, earning an 81.8 coverage grade for the remainder of the season — the fourth-highest at his position.
Cameron added, “A full season with that structure will have Smith right back in the elite conversation.”
Smith’s consistency remained strong throughout the season, even when the overall defense took time to find its rhythm. While not always performing at his absolute peak, he rarely dipped below high-level play.
As the 2025 season approaches, Smith remains focused on team success over individual recognition. “All-Pro honors are nice, but it’s about winning championships,” he told reporters. “Individual accolades will follow team success.”
Players ranked ahead of Smith include Fred Warner (49ers), Zach Baun (Eagles), and Bobby Wagner (Commanders) — a surprising list given Smith’s resume and impact.
