Veteran College QB Mike Wright Commits to East Carolina
East Carolina University has added depth and experience at quarterback with the commitment of veteran Mike Wright, a seasoned dual-threat signal-caller. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound QB, most recently at Northwestern, committed to ECU following an official visit earlier in the week. The news was first reported by Hoist The Colours on Saturday, with ESPN’s Pete Thamel confirming it Sunday night.
Wright will back up starting quarterback Katin Houser, who closed last season strong, leading ECU to a 5-1 finish and a Military Bowl victory over NC State. Houser missed most of spring practice due to wrist surgery but is expected to be fully ready by preseason camp. The backup job originally belonged to Jake Garcia, but his mid-spring departure via the transfer portal prompted ECU to search for a replacement, leading to Wright’s recruitment.
Wright brings a wealth of experience, having played at Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and Northwestern since 2020. He’s made 16 starts across 41 career games, passing for 2,874 yards and 24 touchdowns, while also adding 1,313 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground. Known for his athleticism, Wright averaged 5.0 yards per carry and consistently earned strong rushing grades from Pro Football Focus.
Originally from Atlanta and a product of Woodward Academy, Wright spent three seasons at Vanderbilt, starting 11 games between 2021 and 2022. He tallied over 2,000 total yards during those years before transferring to Mississippi State, where he made three starts last season. At Northwestern, he played in three games in 2023, starting the first two before redshirting to preserve his final year of eligibility.
Wright joins a quarterback room that now includes Houser, redshirt sophomore Raheim Jeter, and freshmen Chaston Ditta and Cole Hodge. While Wright considered changing positions when entering the portal, ECU plans to use him primarily as a quarterback, with the possibility of incorporating him into special offensive packages.
