Notre Dame, known for its extensive travel to face a wide range of opponents during football season, will continue this tradition in 2025. Under coach Marcus Freeman, the Fighting Irish will cover over 4,700 miles this season. According to Action Network’s research, Notre Dame is among the most traveled teams considered legitimate national title contenders for 2025, though it ranks lower among all teams in college football for total miles traveled.
Among teams with national championship odds of 20:1 or better, Notre Dame is third, traveling 4,747 miles with +650 odds to win the title. Only Oregon (8,371 miles) and LSU (7,416 miles) will travel farther among these top contenders. The research also highlights teams with longer odds, where Hawai’i leads the nation with 14,812 miles, followed by Stanford (11,762 miles), surpassing even Oregon. USC was excluded from these rankings due to its championship odds exceeding 20:1.
Nick Shepkowski’s Quick Take:
Notre Dame’s football team has a storied tradition of extensive travel, embracing challenging schedules without complaint. For example, last November, they played Army in New York, followed by a trip to the West Coast to face USC during Thanksgiving weekend.
In contrast, USC’s 2025 schedule includes 7,298 miles of travel with games at Purdue, Illinois, Notre Dame, and Nebraska—less than Oregon’s total. Yet, while Oregon’s coach Dan Lanning doesn’t dwell on the Big Ten’s demanding travel, some at USC seem quick to highlight their travel burdens.
