Gophers Secure Major Commitments in College Hockey This Year

The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s hockey team, led by head coach Bob Motzko, is gearing up for the 2025-26 season with a promising group of recruits who have signed their National Letters of Intent (NLI). While some players may defer enrollment to further develop in junior leagues, these signees are set to bolster the roster with skill and depth. Here’s a look at the five key additions based on the latest available information.

Hayden Reid, a 5’11”, 181-pound forward from Leamington (GOJHL) and Sioux Falls (USHL), is expected to join in 2025. Known for his scoring ability, Reid has posted strong numbers in junior play. Mason Moe, a 6’1”, 185-pound forward from Eden Prairie High School and the USNTDP, signed his NLI but is slated for 2026. His playmaking skills mark him as a future standout. Gavin Katz, a 5’9”, 159-pound center from Mahtomedi and SSM 16U, also signed for 2026, bringing speed and agility despite his smaller frame.

Jackson Nevers, a 6’0”, 201-pound forward playing in the USHL with Madison, offers size and scoring touch, though his arrival date remains unconfirmed. Finally, Matthew Grimes, a 6’1”, 185-pound defenseman, rounds out the class, poised to strengthen the blue line with his physical presence.

Under Motzko’s leadership, the Gophers continue to prioritize Minnesota talent while recruiting from competitive junior leagues like the USHL. This signing class reflects a commitment to building a team capable of contending for a Frozen Four title. Fans can expect these players to make an impact as they join the program in the coming years.
