Oregon Ducks Star Marcus Mariota Commits $12.6M to Convert Home into Shelter for Homeless Youth
In a powerful act of philanthropy, Marcus Mariota, celebrated Oregon Ducks quarterback and NFL veteran, is investing $12.6 million to transform a property into a sanctuary for homeless youth in Oregon, addressing a critical social challenge.
A Heartfelt Commitment
From his roots in Honolulu to his standout career with the Oregon Ducks and the NFL, Mariota has consistently prioritized community impact. This initiative reflects his deep dedication to supporting at-risk youth facing housing instability.
“Every young person deserves a safe space and the tools to build a brighter future,” Mariota shared during a recent press conference. “This project is about offering hope and opportunity to those who need it most.”
A New Home for Hope
The property, located in the Portland metro area, was acquired earlier this year and is being renovated to house dozens of young people aged 16–24. Named “Oregon Youth Haven,” the shelter will feature private rooms, shared spaces, educational facilities, and access to mental health support and job training.
The facility aims to provide not just immediate shelter but also long-term stability through comprehensive programs designed to empower youth.
Tackling a Growing Crisis
Oregon’s Department of Human Services reports thousands of youth face homelessness annually, often due to family issues, poverty, or systemic barriers. Many endure unsafe conditions, sleeping on streets or in unstable situations. Mariota’s initiative seeks to address this urgent need.
“Marcus Mariota’s generosity is transformative,” said Jane Smith, director of Oregon Youth Services. “This shelter will offer critical support to youth in desperate need.”
A Collaborative Effort
The project is a partnership between Mariota’s foundation, local nonprofits, and city agencies, incorporating outreach, mentorship, and educational programs to help youth gain skills and secure jobs. Mariota plans to stay actively involved through volunteering and advocacy.
A Blueprint for Change
The Oregon Youth Haven sets an example for how public figures can drive meaningful impact, showcasing the power of community-led solutions to address complex issues like youth homelessness.
Looking Ahead
Renovations are slated for completion by spring 2026, with the shelter opening soon after. Mariota’s team plans to expand similar initiatives across Oregon and beyond, offering a scalable model to combat youth homelessness.
As Oregon confronts rising homelessness rates, Mariota’s investment serves as both a beacon of hope and a rallying call for collective action.
