“A Significant Setback”: Frank Ragnow’s Surprise Retirement Leaves Detroit Lions in a Tough Spot, Says Mina Kimes
Frank Ragnow’s unexpected retirement sent shockwaves through the NFL community, leaving fans and analysts reeling. Widely regarded as one of the league’s top offensive linemen, Ragnow’s decision to step away from football has created a major void for the Detroit Lions, who now face a critical challenge in replacing his leadership and skill.

Ragnow enjoyed a standout NFL career, establishing himself as a cornerstone of the Lions’ offensive line. However, after battling through years of injuries, he decided it was time to put his well-being and family first.
“I’ve tried to convince myself that I’m feeling good, but I’m not, and it’s time to prioritize my health and my family’s future,” Ragnow explained.
Detroit’s offense thrived last season—ranking second in the league—and Ragnow played a central role in that success. His departure is a serious blow to the team’s momentum.
ESPN’s Mina Kimes weighed in on the news, emphasizing the gravity of the loss.
“It’s massive,” Kimes stated. “The Lions’ success over the last couple of years has really been inside out, starting with the offensive line. Losing Ragnow, one of the best centers in football, is huge.”
She further noted the pressure now facing Detroit’s offensive unit: “There is going to be a lot of pressure on this new offensive line. Their new offensive coordinator has to figure all of this out. It’s going to be quite a transition, but this is a big loss.”
The Lions have been one of the NFC’s top contenders in recent seasons, but with Ragnow gone, the road ahead becomes far more uncertain.
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson also expressed his admiration and respect for Ragnow, calling him one of the toughest players he’s ever coached.
“I don’t know if I’ve been around a tougher player in my life than him,” Johnson said. “He made everyone around him better. The amount of pain he pushed through was incredible. Whether you played with him or against him, everyone in this league respected him.”
The NFL community, including players, coaches, and fans, has shown an outpouring of support for Ragnow following his retirement. While his absence will be deeply felt, his legacy and impact on the game remain undeniable.
