
The NFL community is mourning the loss of Super Bowl champion and two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jim Marshall, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 87.
A legendary figure in Minnesota Vikings history, Marshall played 20 seasons in the league and was known for his remarkable toughness and durability. As a key member of the iconic “Purple People Eaters” defensive line, he appeared in 270 consecutive games for the Vikings—a testament to his resilience. He ended his career with 130.5 sacks and 30 fumble recoveries.
The Vikings released a heartfelt statement on Tuesday afternoon honoring Marshall’s life and legacy. “With deep sadness and immense gratitude for the joy he brought to our organization and community, the Minnesota Vikings share that Jim Marshall passed away Tuesday at 87, after a lengthy hospitalization,” the team said. “Jim’s legacy extends far beyond the field—marked by an infectious spirit, boundless generosity, and a joyful presence that left a lasting mark on everyone he encountered.” Marshall’s influence stretched well beyond his playing days.
“Jim was a true leader who set the standard for others to follow,” said Vikings owners Mark and Zygi Wilf. “His presence shaped the Vikings’ identity for years, and he’ll forever be remembered as both an outstanding athlete and an extraordinary individual.” The Vikings plan to hold a celebration of Marshall’s life, with details to be announced soon.
