Son of EX-Wild veteran Commits to Gophers Hockey

Moorhead, Minnesota native and forward Wyatt Cullen gave a verbal commitment to the Gophers hockey program on Monday, marking another key prep-level addition for head coach Bob Motzko and his staff.

“I’m proud and honored to announce my commitment to play Division I hockey at the University of Minnesota. Huge thanks to God, my family, teammates, coaches, and everyone who’s helped me along the way. #gogophs〽️,” Cullen shared on Instagram.

Wyatt Cullen, who played last season with the U.S. National U17 Team, tallied six goals and 25 assists for a total of 31 points across 55 games. Born in September 2008, the 16-year-old still has a couple of years before making the leap to college hockey.

He is the son of former Minnesota Wild forward Matt Cullen, who played four NHL seasons in his home state. Matt is especially known for his standout high school career at Moorhead, where he played under his father, and for a strong collegiate run at St. Cloud State before enjoying a 20-year NHL career.

Wyatt’s commitment is also notable given his brother Brooks is currently pledged to Michigan State, making this a significant in-state recruiting win for Bob Motzko and the Gophers.

Cullen is now the third Minnesota prep player to commit to the Gophers in the past week, joining Lakeville’s Gunnar Conboy and Grand Rapids goaltender Carter Casey. After facing criticism for last cycle’s recruiting efforts, Motzko and his staff are off to a fast and promising start this time around.
