MSU-Commit Flips Decision to follow Brother to Minnesota Gophers

Some were caught off guard on Monday when Moorhead native Wyatt Cullen announced his verbal commitment to the Minnesota Gophers—especially since his older brother, Brooks, had been committed to Michigan State since November. But now, Brooks has officially changed course and committed to Minnesota as well.

“I’m proud and honored to announce my commitment to play Division I hockey at the University of Minnesota,” Brooks shared on Instagram Tuesday. “Thank you to God, my family, teammates, coaches, and everyone who has helped me reach this point. #gogophs〽️”

Brooks Cullen played a key role in Moorhead’s 2025 State Championship run, racking up 23 goals and 25 assists for 48 points in just 29 games. He closed out the 2024-25 season with a 10-game stint for the Fargo Force in the USHL.

At 6-foot, 185 pounds and already 18 years old, Brooks is expected to spend one more season in the USHL before joining the Gophers for the 2026-27 campaign.

The Cullen hockey legacy doesn’t stop with Brooks and Wyatt. Their younger brother, Joey Cullen, just finished a standout Bantam AA season with Moorhead in 2024-25. At just 15, Joey is already drawing interest from the Gophers coaching staff.

Minnesota has historically faced challenges recruiting out of Moorhead, often losing talent to nearby North Dakota. But with head coach Bob Motzko securing commitments from both Brooks and Wyatt—and with Joey possibly on the horizon—it marks a major recruiting victory for the Gophers program.
