One of the nation’s top high school basketball prospects has listed the Minnesota Golden Gophers among his six finalists.
Quinn Costello, a 6-foot-10 forward from Maine, is ranked No. 28 nationally by Rivals and holds spots at No. 74 on 247Sports and No. 50 on ESPN, making him a consensus four-star recruit.
His final list includes Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Purdue, and Texas.
Several high-profile programs pursued Costello but didn’t make the cut, including Big Ten rivals Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Ohio State, Penn State, and Wisconsin, as well as power-conference schools like Florida State, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Villanova.
As for what will guide his choice, Costello told Rivals’ Jamie Shaw (now with On3) that relationships will be key, putting extra pressure on first-year Minnesota head coach Niko Medved to connect with the 2026 prospect.
“The relationship piece is going to be big for me,” Costello said. “I’m most successful when coaches really trust me, and I really trust coaches, and we have a super strong, unbreakable relationship. I say it a lot, and I hate to say it, but if basketball doesn’t work out, I’m still at a school where I’m set up for success.”
Minnesota has also shown interest in Costello’s teammate at The Newman School in Boston, Lucas Morillo—a 6-foot-6 shooting guard ranked No. 32 nationally by Rivals and a top-100 prospect by ESPN and 247Sports—extending him an offer on July 29. The Gophers offered Costello on June 3.
Minnesota’s 2026 recruiting class so far features two in-state standouts: guard Cedric Tomes from East Ridge High School and forward Nolan Anderson from Wayzata High School.
