Gophers Face Major Setback With 11 Players and 2 Starters Sidelined

The Gophers will be missing two potential starting cornerbacks in Thursday night’s matchup with Buffalo.

Veteran defensive back Darius Green appeared to have locked down the starting nickel role in camp, but he’ll miss Thursday’s matchup. Redshirt freshman Mike Gerald, who rotated in with the starters at outside corner during preseason, will also be sidelined against Buffalo.

The obvious replacement for Green is Jai’Onte McMillan, who logged 160 slot snaps last season, but his own status is questionable. That leaves Minnesota’s cornerback depth under heavy scrutiny, especially with Buffalo’s top receiver, Victor Snow, lining up in the slot. On the outside, the Gophers will turn to Za’Quan Bryan, John Nestor, and Jaylen Bowden, while safety Aidan Gousby could see time at nickel if both Green and McMillan remain out.

Elsewhere, the Gophers will also be without Christian Driver, Mo Omonode, and Theorin Randle, all of whom missed most of camp due to injury.
