Are the Washington Capitals plotting something big?
In recent years, the Caps have been very active in free agency and trades, but this season has been unusually quiet.
Maybe it’s because the current roster is already strong enough to contend. That’s likely true—the team as it stands has few weaknesses. Still, this isn’t the typical approach of Brian MacLellan and Chris Patrick.
Last summer, they made bold moves at the NHL Draft, acquiring Logan Thompson and Jacob Chychrun. Both have now signed long-term contracts and are expected to be key contributors for years to come.
This quiet period makes me think Washington could be gearing up for something significant.
Jack Roslovic is a player who fits well with the Caps—a young, versatile, point-producing forward. With a projected $4 million AAV, the team could likely afford him. But is this the move they need, or is there something even bigger in the works?
Jason Robertson of the Dallas Stars is another intriguing option. Reports on his trade availability are mixed, but he would also fit well with Washington’s plans.
The main question is cost—trading too much could disrupt the strong core the Caps have built. A deal involving Anthony Beauvillier, Matt Roy, and a couple of picks might work, but anything more could be tough.
In the end, fans should trust Chris Patrick and Brian MacLellan. Time and again, they’ve proven capable of assembling a winning roster—and there’s every reason to believe they’ll do it again in 2025–26.
