Hot stove season is officially underway across Major League Baseball. The Houston Astros could see a significant roster shakeup in the coming months. With free agency opening soon, rumors suggest that Framber Valdez may not re-sign with the team.
Houston will likely need to either pursue another free agent to fill the gap or explore trades to add a reliable starting pitcher.
Astros linked to Pirates’ starter Mitch Keller
At the 2025 trade deadline, Pittsburgh Pirates starter Mitch Keller stayed put, despite widespread speculation he might be moved. But trade rumors are already circling again.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller lists Keller as a prime target for the Houston Astros:
“Houston Astros: A Trade for a Starting Pitcher
Prime Target: Pittsburgh’s Mitch Keller ($16.9M in 2026, $18.4M in 2027, $20.4M in 2028)”
With Hunter Brown as the only other clear option, the Astros’ rotation could be in trouble if Framber Valdez leaves via free agency. Injuries and a lack of depth may have contributed to Houston missing the playoffs this season.
Keller would slot nicely as the Astros’ No. 2 or No. 3 starter. Over 176.1 innings in 2025, he posted a 4.19 ERA with 150 strikeouts. He’s also under contract through 2028 on a team-friendly five-year, $77 million deal.
