Oscar Allen opened up about his shock and disappointment over the way his stint with the West Coast Eagles ended, saying the club’s approach made him realize just how ruthless the business side of football can be.
In an interview on Mix94.5’s Pete & Kymba with Ben Cousins, the former Eagles captain admitted he was let down by the level of support he received after his injury, adding that West Coast’s decision not to match Brisbane’s offer ultimately sealed his move.
“It was pretty eye-opening”
“Oh, probably a little bit, yeah,” Allen admitted when asked if his exit left a sour taste. “I get now that it’s a business — the past year has really opened my eyes to that side of things. Early in my career, West Coast looked after me really well, but there’s been a lot of change at the club. Some of the people who always had my back just aren’t there anymore.”
He said the support he received once his situation became public “wasn’t quite what I expected,” and that contrast played a role in his decision.
The 25-year-old explained that while West Coast seemed uncertain, Brisbane’s strong interest made the choice simple. “I’m going to a club where I know I’m genuinely wanted, they’ve made that really clear, and that means a lot to me,” Allen said.
Calling it a “great opportunity,” he added that Brisbane’s culture and success made it the ideal place to begin a new chapter. “Why wouldn’t I want to be somewhere that really wants me?”
