With Deebo Samuel Sr. now joining Terry McLaurin, the Washington Commanders have three wide receivers under contract for next season. His arrival strengthens the top of the depth chart, allowing the team to focus on adding depth in free agency and the draft. However, his presence puts several current players at risk.

Olamide Zaccheaus had a career-best season under head coach Dan Quinn, but his skill set closely mirrors Samuel’s. Both excel in short-to-intermediate routes and generating yards after the catch. With Washington unlikely to extend Zaccheaus, his future with the team remains uncertain.
Samuel’s versatility could also impact running back Austin Ekeler. The free-agent signing formed a solid tandem with Brian Robinson Jr. and earned second-team All-Pro honors as a kick returner. However, injuries and playoff struggles hurt his overall performance. If Kliff Kingsbury incorporates Samuel into the run game, Ekeler’s role—especially in passing situations—could diminish.
Wide receiver Noah Brown is another player affected by Samuel’s arrival. After joining Washington late in 2024, he made key contributions, including a Hail Mary touchdown that won NFL Play of the Year. However, a season-ending injury halted his progress. With free agency looming, Brown must prove he’s healthy before Washington considers re-signing him on a short-term deal.
Luke McCaffrey, a third-round pick in 2024, had a quiet rookie season, tallying only 24 targets. While he showed promise as a returner, Samuel’s presence limits his role in the offense. McCaffrey must make significant strides this offseason to secure a bigger role.
Finally, Dyami Brown’s late-season breakout, especially during Washington’s NFC Championship run, has likely earned him free-agent interest. With Samuel now in the fold, Brown’s role would be limited, making it more likely he finds a bigger opportunity elsewhere.
