Wife of Former Alabama Men’s Basketball Coach Wimp Sanderson Passes Away at 86
Sarah Annette Sanderson, the wife of longtime Alabama men’s basketball coach Wimp Sanderson, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86. Born on November 19, 1938, in Florence, Alabama, Annette attended Coffee High School, where she met Wimp. The two were married shortly after she graduated, beginning a marriage that lasted 67 years.
In a heartfelt family obituary, Annette was remembered as a devoted Christian, wife, and mother who supported her husband and their three sons—Jim, Scott, and Barry—all of whom pursued coaching careers. The family described her as the “ultimate coach’s wife and mother,” standing by her family through the highs and lows of a life in sports. Annette and Wimp had 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Wimp Sanderson began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Alabama in 1960, later serving as an assistant for two decades before being named head coach in 1981. Over his 12-year tenure leading the Crimson Tide, he compiled a 267–119 record.
Annette also had a career in real estate, which she left when Wimp became head coach. She was deeply involved in supporting her family’s coaching careers and was known for her spirited presence at games—even selecting Wimp’s iconic plaid jackets.
“She loved cheering on her husband and sons and enjoyed playing tennis, reading, cooking, decorating, and spending time with family and friends,” her obituary said. “She embraced life fully and will be dearly missed.”
A celebration of Annette’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 7, at 11 a.m. at the University Church of Christ in Tuscaloosa. Visitation will take place beforehand from 9:30 to 11 a.m., followed by a graveside service at 4 p.m. at Florence Cemetery in her hometown.
Our thoughts are with Wimp, their sons, and the extended Sanderson family, as well as the Alabama basketball community.
