The Detroit Lions are aiming for a big leap in 2025. Despite being the top team in the NFC last season with a 15-2 record and securing the No. 1 seed, their playoff run ended in disappointment when they were knocked out in the divisional round by the Washington Commanders.
This year, Detroit is set to return with one of the most talented rosters in the league. However, one area general manager Brad Holmes may look to strengthen is the edge rusher position. Aside from Aidan Hutchinson, the Lions lack a true starting-caliber player in this role.
While there are still capable free agents available, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggests that Detroit should go all-in and trade for Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson.
“Hendrickson should be a top priority for many teams looking for a pass-rusher. The Lions, in particular, should be interested in adding him to pair with Hutchinson,” Knox said.
Hendrickson has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the offseason, with the Bengals granting him permission to seek a trade after contract extension talks fell through. The All-Pro defender has voiced frustrations with Cincinnati’s handling of the negotiations and is reportedly unwilling to play under his current deal, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
“There’s no update on Trey Hendrickson’s contract situation, which remains at a standstill. Hendrickson is firm in his stance, showing no interest in playing on his \$16 million salary for 2025. It’s a waiting game at this point,” Fowler reported.
If the Bengals opt to trade Hendrickson rather than offer him a new contract, the Lions should pursue him aggressively. The 30-year-old would create one of the league’s most formidable pass-rushing duos alongside Hutchinson and immediately elevate Detroit to serious Super Bowl contention in the NFC.
While acquiring Hendrickson would likely require a significant trade package and a hefty contract worth over \$30 million annually, the investment would be worthwhile. Detroit is in the midst of a Super Bowl window, and Hendrickson could be the crucial piece to push them over the top.
The four-time Pro Bowler is coming off two impressive seasons, each with 17.5 sacks, showing he’s playing at the peak of his career.
