Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith is prioritizing a robust defensive secondary this offseason, focusing heavily on bolstering the cornerback position through the transfer portal. After securing former Bowling Green safety Tracy Revels and UTSA corner Anthony Pinnance III, the Spartans have added another experienced corner from the American Conference, Dontavius Nash.
The 6-foot-2 Gastonia, North Carolina native joins Michigan State from East Carolina, where he played last season after spending three years at North Carolina. A former four-star recruit, Nash recorded 47 tackles, three pass deflections, and two interceptions with the Pirates.
This acquisition follows a symbolic exchange, as former Spartan quarterback Katin Houser transferred to East Carolina and became their starter. Michigan State’s secondary faced challenges in 2024, with injuries exposing a thin and unproven group, compounded by the departure of key players like Dillon Tatum (Northwestern), Charles Brantley (Miami), and Jaylen Thompson (Memphis) via the transfer portal.
Nash’s experience adds critical depth to a position in need, aligning with Michigan State’s storied tradition of elite defensive backs.
The Spartans may continue to reinforce the secondary, as Spartans Illustrated’s Jacob Cotsonika noted that former Texas Tech safety Devynn Cromwell visited East Lansing recently. Coach Smith’s active work in the transfer portal signals a commitment to rebuilding depth in a struggling position group, offering hope for a program seeking positive momentum.
