Chance Stephens, a former guard from Maryland and Loyola Marymount, has committed to the Minnesota Gophers via the transfer portal, per CBS Sports and 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz.

The 6’3″ guard from Riverside, CA, started his college career at LMU, playing 28 games as a freshman and averaging 6.0 points in about 17 minutes per game. A three-point specialist, he took 4.5 threes per game, hitting 37.4 percent, while attempting just 0.5 two-point shots. In a standout November 2023 game against Wake Forest in Jamaica, Stephens sank 7 of 10 threes, scoring a game-high 23 points to lead LMU to an overtime victory. He also made at least three triples in seven other games.

After transferring to Maryland under coach Kevin Willard, Stephens redshirted the 2023-24 season due to a knee injury and played sparingly in seven games last season, all before Dec. 4. At Minnesota, he’s expected to compete for a reserve role, with his three-point shooting potentially adding value to a transfer-heavy roster.

Gophers coach Niko Medved, hired this offseason, has rebuilt the team largely through the portal. The backcourt will likely center on sophomore Isaac Asuma and transfers Chansey Willis Jr. and Langston Reynolds, but Stephens and others have a chance to carve out contributing roles.
