Alan Haller Shares Heartfelt Message Following Michigan State Exit
Alan Haller is officially out as Michigan State’s athletic director, ending a nearly four-year tenure. The university has now begun a national search for his replacement.

During his time in East Lansing, Haller was responsible for key hires like football coach Jonathan Smith, hockey coach Adam Nightingale, and women’s basketball coach Robyn Fralick. While those decisions were seen as positives, Haller often faced criticism for falling short in the NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) space, an area where Michigan State struggled to keep up with other major programs.
Though the news of his departure surprised many — including Haller himself — a large portion of the Spartan fanbase welcomed the change, hoping for an AD who prioritizes NIL competitiveness and stronger leadership. Haller’s tenure was also marked by several controversies, including the tunnel incident at Michigan Stadium, Kaleel Mullings’ alleged “stomping,” and the Connor Stalions-Central Michigan saga, which all put the program’s leadership under the microscope.
Following the announcement, Haller released a personal statement expressing gratitude for the support he received and pride in his accomplishments. He acknowledged the sadness of leaving but affirmed he will “always be a Spartan.”
While Haller was widely respected for his character and relationships — especially with Smith and Tom Izzo — many felt he lacked the aggressive approach needed to thrive in the current collegiate athletics landscape.
The incoming athletic director will face big expectations as Michigan State looks to reassert itself nationally in the ever-evolving world of college sports.
