PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Pirates received troubling news about pitcher Jared Jones. As reported by John Perrotto of Pittsburgh Baseball Now, the young ace is likely facing Tommy John surgery, which would sideline him for the rest of this season and likely all of next year as well.
Perrotto noted that, according to sources, doctors informed Jones that he will need the procedure, with one source stating it’s “all but a done deal” that the surgery will happen soon.
Jones, 23, has been battling elbow issues this season, specifically a strained ulnar collateral ligament. After throwing just 12 innings across four Grapefruit League appearances, he was shut down.
A second-round pick by the Pirates in 2020, Jones made 22 starts in the majors last year, posting a 6-8 record and a 4.14 ERA.
Initially, he attempted to recover without surgery, but with little progress, it appears the Pirates are preparing for the likelihood he won’t return anytime soon. Jones now joins fellow young pitcher Paul Skenes as a long-term developmental piece for Pittsburgh’s future rotation. MLB.com’s Alex Stumpf added that Jones is scheduled to meet with Dr. Keith Meister on May 20. While surgery has not been officially confirmed yet, it remains a strong possibility.
