PITTSBURGH — A recent incident at PNC Park involving a fan’s fall from the outfield wall has led to criminal charges.
Kavan Markwood fell from the Roberto Clemente Wall in right field during the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on April 30.
According to Jennifer Borrasso of KDKA TV News, the Pennsylvania State Police Liquor Control Enforcement has charged Ethan Kirkwood, a 21-year-old from McKeesport, with two counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor.
Authorities allege that Kirkwood provided alcohol to Markwood, who is 20 and legally underage, and that the alcohol contributed to Markwood’s fall. The charges, both third-degree misdemeanors, were officially filed in Magisterial District Court 05-0-03 on May 20. If convicted, Kirkwood could face penalties including up to one year in jail or fines of up to $2,500.
During the seventh inning of the Pirates’ game against the Cubs, Andrew McCutchen hit a ball that bounced off Dansby Swanson’s glove, scoring two runs and giving Pittsburgh the lead.
In the excitement, fan Kavan Markwood, standing near the front of the Roberto Clemente Wall in right field, lost his balance and fell over the 21-foot-high railing onto the warning track. Emergency personnel quickly responded, and Markwood was taken to Allegheny General Hospital.
He suffered serious injuries, including a broken neck, clavicle, and back, requiring a long recovery. According to Jennifer Phillips, who started a GoFundMe, Markwood is now speaking with family and has taken his first steps.
As of May 20 at 1:40 p.m., the fundraiser had raised $67,565 of its $70,000 goal from 1,700 donors.
Markwood graduated from South Allegheny High in 2022 and played football at Walsh University and Wheeling Jesuit University, both Division II schools.
