Matt Rhule Slams the Brakes on College Football Playoff Expansion

The College Football Playoff (CFP) system has faced significant criticism from many coaches in the college football community. While some are satisfied with its current format, Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule isn’t among them.

Rhule made his stance clear during an appearance on Husker Online, as reported by The Sporting News, expressing that he would greatly expand the number of teams eligible for the CFP if given the chance.

“So the more spots, the better. We’re playing in a really, really tough league,” Rhule said. “We’re playing really, really good teams. And you know what? If you play in this league you deserve a chance to get to the postseason and see what you can do.”

Matt Rhule’s comments on the CFP didn’t sit well with some college football insiders

Matt Rhule faced online backlash for his recent comments on expanding the College Football Playoff system, drawing criticism from voices like On3’s Ari Wasserman. Wasserman, referencing his own article, posted on X: “I wrote about it extensively here after watching the full clip. Instead of soft comments about College Football Playoff reform, how about Matt Rhule — and others — just get better?”

Heading into his third season as head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Rhule holds a 12-13 record over two years. He likely feels that Nebraska deserved more CFP consideration last season, especially after finishing with a 7-6 record (3-6 in Big Ten play) and securing a Pinstripe Bowl win over Boston College.

At one point early in the 2024 season, Nebraska was ranked No. 22 and No. 23 in the AP Top 25 Poll. However, they eventually dropped out of the rankings as the season progressed. Rhule remains optimistic heading into 2025, particularly with quarterback Dylan Raiola at the helm, hoping the offense can take a big step forward.
