Gophers’ Ace Smashes 43-Year Dry Spell with Big Ten’s Elite Crown

The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded each year to the top male and female student-athletes at every conference school. This year, Minnesota’s recipients were gymnastics standout Mya Hooten and basketball veteran Dawson Garcia. First established in 1915, the award recognizes one graduating student-athlete from each university who excels in both athletics and academics.

Garcia became the first Minnesota men’s basketball player to win the award since Randy Breuer in 1983, breaking a 43-year gap. He is the 24th player from the program to receive this honor.

“My brother! Well deserved, glad I got to be a part of it @Dawson23lee 🤝🏻🤞🏼💛,” teammate Parker Fox posted on X.

Dawson Garcia averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game in the 2024-25 season, with shooting splits of 47.4% from the field, 37.3% from three, and 78.3% from the free-throw line. His season highlight was a game-winning halfcourt shot in overtime against No. 20 Michigan at Williams Arena, where he recorded 27 points and 12 rebounds.

Mya Hooten, a standout for Minnesota gymnastics, became the fifth Gophers gymnast to win the Big Ten Medal of Honor and the second consecutive winner after Gianna Gerdes in 2023. A native of Woodbury, Minnesota, Hooten concluded her career as a six-time Big Ten Champion, four-time First Team All-Big Ten selection, and Big Ten All-Championships honoree.
