Roster Update: Lions Sign Veteran Linebacker Zach Cunningham

The Detroit Lions have added depth to their linebacker unit just ahead of the start of organized team activities (OTAs) by signing veteran linebacker Zach Cunningham, according to NFL media reports on Tuesday.
Cunningham, a second-round draft pick by the Houston Texans in 2017, brings eight years of NFL experience and has suited up for four different teams. He played seven games for the Denver Broncos last season, mostly contributing on special teams after being promoted from the practice squad in late November.
Known for his tackling ability, Cunningham has recorded over 100 tackles in three separate seasons. His standout year came in 2020, when he led the league with 164 combined tackles, along with seven tackles for loss and three sacks. That performance earned him a four-year, $58 million extension from the Texans. However, after multiple team rule violations and benchings, he was waived in 2021.
After being claimed by the Titans, Cunningham finished out that season in Tennessee and remained with the team through 2022. He then signed with the Eagles in 2023, making 10 starts in 13 games before joining the Broncos’ practice squad.
The Lions’ linebacker room already includes Alex Anzalone, Jack Campbell, and Derrick Barnes as key returners. Malcolm Rodriguez is recovering from an ACL tear, with Trevor Nowaske, Anthony Pittman, and Ezekiel Turner also expected to compete for roles following strong showings late last season.
Cunningham’s signing offers experience and added depth as Detroit prepares for its 2025 campaign.
