Blazers Set to Land $186M Superstar in Blockbuster Trade Involving Deandre Ayton

Domantas Sabonis is a true all-around talent.

He excels as a passer, rebounder, and scorer, consistently threatening to notch a triple-double on any given night.

One Western Conference team that’s faced years of struggles might benefit greatly from his presence.

The Portland Trail Blazers have made strides under head coach Chauncey Billups, but they’ve still fallen short of becoming a top-tier contender in the West.

On a recent episode of The Lowe Post, Zach Lowe and John Hollinger discussed a trade scenario that could be the key to pushing Portland into serious playoff contention.

The two NBA insiders built a framework of a deal that would send Deandre Ayton to Sacramento and Sabonis to the Trail Blazers.

Hollinger floated the idea of a three-team trade potentially involving the Suns, but Zach Lowe offered a different angle, noting that “there’s a lot of ingredients you could throw around” in any deal.

Still, Hollinger remained skeptical, pointing to Sacramento’s current win-now mentality.
“They probably see that as too much of a reset, unless they were getting Simons in it too,” he said. “The Blazers need to figure out if they believe in Scoot \[Henderson] enough to just make him a full-time starter.”

If the trade were to materialize, Domantas Sabonis would join a Portland core featuring Anfernee Simons, Shaedon Sharpe, and Jerami Grant. While that group may lack a definitive top-10 superstar, the Blazers showed flashes of strong play last season.

Their most impressive run came in early 2025, when they went 9-1 over a 10-game stretch and ranked second in defensive efficiency (allowing just 104.9 points per 100 possessions). That success helped earn Chauncey Billups a multi-year contract extension in the offseason.

Adding Sabonis — a three-time All-Star — could further elevate the roster. His ability to facilitate the offense and find open shooters would be a major upgrade, particularly compared to Deandre Ayton, who is a solid rebounder but doesn’t share Sabonis’ court vision or playmaking ability.

Beyond the on-court impact, there’s a sentimental angle as well. Sabonis’ father, Arvydas Sabonis, was a beloved Blazer during his time in Portland from 1995–2001 and again in 2002–03. Seeing Domantas suit up in the same jersey would be a full-circle moment — and potentially a turning point for the franchise.

Whether Portland decides to make a major splash this offseason remains to be seen.
