The Kansas Jayhawks have a new transfer portal target, as former Northwestern Oklahoma State guard Camron McDowell is currently visiting the campus.
After finishing the season with the second-highest scoring average in Division II (27.3 points per game), McDowell entered the portal and could be the next addition to Kansas’ roster.
Standing at 6-foot-6, McDowell is a versatile guard who previously played at Georgia and Jacksonville State before excelling at the D-II level. He is not related to current Jayhawk Jamari McDowell.
Although he initially drew interest from programs like Utah when he entered the portal, McDowell delayed his recruitment while exploring the NBA Draft. Now, he’s focused on selecting a new school for his final year of eligibility.
Kansas’ backcourt is led by top freshman Darryn Peterson, along with key pieces like Melvin Council Jr., Jayden Dawson, and Elmarko Jackson.
McDowell, a left-handed scorer, brings strong offensive skills and the ability to create his own shot. He shot 39% from beyond the arc last season and is effective both on and off the ball.
Even in a supporting role, the Georgia native could offer immediate scoring off the bench. His efficiency numbers soared during his time at NWOSU.
With three open scholarships still available, head coach Bill Self seems to be targeting McDowell as a potential addition. While some might question his Division II background, his scoring ability would be a valuable asset to a Kansas bench that lacks natural offensive creators.
