From MN Ice to MSU’s Rival Rink: Hockey Star’s Bold Leap Stuns Gophers Fans

Mason West is set to join the Michigan State Spartans hockey team in East Lansing.

This marks a major recruiting victory for Michigan State, as West is widely regarded as one of Minnesota’s top recent dual-sport athletes, excelling both in hockey and as a quarterback at Edina High School.

While some may have hoped he’d stay in-state with the Minnesota Gophers, his commitment isn’t unexpected—he had previously narrowed his choices to Michigan State and Boston College.

Mason West is projected to be selected in the first two rounds of the upcoming NHL Entry Draft later this month. After the draft, he plans to play one final season as Edina High School’s quarterback this fall before shifting his full focus to hockey. He’ll then join the Fargo Force of the USHL—where he appeared in 12 games this past spring—before heading to college next year to begin his NCAA hockey career out of state.

Standing at 6’6″ and weighing 215 pounds, West is a right-shot center who tallied 27 goals and 49 points during his final high school hockey season. On the football field, he impressed as well, passing for over 2,500 yards and 37 touchdowns as a junior.

In addition to his hockey prospects, West has also drawn Division I football interest, holding offers from programs like Miami (OH), Marshall, and Kent State.
