
The Cincinnati Reds have officially parted ways with Jeimer Candelario after he cleared waivers, per Gordon Wittenmyer of The Enquirer.
The veteran infielder had been designated for assignment the previous Sunday.
Candelario struggled at the plate during his time with the Reds, batting just .113 with two home runs this season.
He was sidelined in April due to a lumbar spine strain and later went on a rehab stint with Triple-A Louisville. However, his performance there also fell short, as he posted a .211/.318/.333 slash line over 15 games.
In December 2023, the Reds signed Jeimer Candelario to a three-year, \$45 million contract.
With his release, the team will now be responsible for paying out the remainder of that deal.
The decision signals that the front office is willing to absorb financial losses if it opens up more consistent opportunities for higher-performing players.
