Spartans Donate $9 Million for Texas Flood Relief; QB Aidan Chiles Joins Recovery Effort
In a powerful act of solidarity and service, Michigan State University has donated an impressive $9 million to aid victims of the devastating flash floods that recently tore through communities across Texas. The donation, among the most significant given by any college athletics program this year, will go toward emergency relief, housing, food supplies, and long-term recovery efforts.
The Spartans didn’t stop at financial support—they took action in person.
Starting quarterback Aidan Chiles, a promising leader on and off the field, made headlines when he traveled to one of the hardest-hit areas to help firsthand. Chiles was spotted assisting local volunteers, handing out water and emergency supplies, and even helping families clear debris from their homes.
“This isn’t about football—it’s about people,” Chiles told a local news outlet. “If showing up and getting my hands dirty can help even one person feel supported, it’s worth it.”
Head Coach Jonathan Smith, who took over the Spartans program in late 2023, accompanied Chiles during part of the visit. Smith, known for his emphasis on character and community, praised Chiles’s commitment to leadership beyond the gridiron.
“Aidan represents what we want every Spartan to be—tough, selfless, and deeply connected to the community,” Smith said.
Also present in Texas was Alan Haller, MSU’s Vice President and Director of Athletics, who helped coordinate the relief efforts in partnership with local organizations. Jennifer Smith, Director of Student-Athlete Support Services, joined the team to oversee outreach and ensure resources were being distributed effectively.
“This is more than a donation—it’s a promise,” Haller said. “We want these communities to know we stand with them for the long haul.”
The $9 million in aid will be administered through trusted nonprofit partners focused on disaster response and long-term community rebuilding. With both financial power and personal presence, the Spartans are showing the nation that their greatest strength lies not only in competition—but in compassion.
