Gophers Hits All-Time 242 Picks Record with Four First-Round Picks

The University of Minnesota men’s hockey program further cemented its legacy as a national powerhouse at the 2025 NHL Draft, producing four first-round selections—the most in a single draft for the program since the 2011–12 season. With Matthew Wood (15th), Oliver Moore (19th), Jimmy Snuggerud (23rd), and Sam Rinzel (25th) all selected in the first round, the Gophers continued their tradition of developing NHL-ready talent at an elite level.

In total, five Gophers were drafted in 2025, bringing the school’s all-time NHL draft total to 248—the most ever by any NCAA program. This latest milestone not only reinforces Minnesota’s dominance in collegiate hockey but also showcases its ability to attract and develop top-tier prospects capable of immediate impact at the professional level.

Snuggerud and Rinzel were long projected as first-round talents after standout seasons in the Big Ten. Moore and Wood, both known for their explosive skating and offensive instincts, impressed NHL scouts with strong showings at the combine and in postseason play. Each of the four is expected to make an NHL roster within the next two years.

Head coach Bob Motzko praised the group’s work ethic and the team culture that continues to elevate Minnesota on the national stage. “These guys earned it,” Motzko said. “They’re great players, but they’re even better teammates. It’s what makes this program special.”

As the Gophers prepare for the 2025–26 season with a reloaded roster and a challenging non-conference schedule, the momentum from this historic draft class will serve as both validation and fuel. Minnesota is more than a college hockey brand—it’s a launchpad for the NHL’s next stars.
