Luis Gil is ready to take the mound for the first time this regular season, with the New York Yankees announcing that he’ll begin a rehab assignment by pitching for Double-A Somerset.
Gil has been out of action since spring training due to a lat strain. The former AL Rookie of the Year has been steadily progressing in his recovery, and now, just ahead of the MLB All-Star break, he’s set to take his most significant step toward returning to the big leagues.
“I’ve been looking forward to this moment since the injury,” Luis Gil told reporters. “I focused on treatment and getting healthy again. My goal has always been to get back on the field, help the team, and contribute.”
With Gerrit Cole sidelined for the season due to Tommy John surgery and Clarke Schmidt undergoing the same procedure following a summer injury, the Yankees’ rotation has taken a major hit. Ryan Yarbrough and Marcus Stroman have also spent time on the Injured List, leaving New York scrambling for answers in their bullpen.
Last season, Gil posted an impressive 15-7 record with a 3.50 ERA and 171 strikeouts over 29 starts, logging 151.2 innings. He was placed on the 60-day IL back on March 24.
