The New York Yankees are rolling the dice on a reliever recently cut loose by their crosstown rivals.
Per MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, the Yankees have claimed right-handed pitcher Rico Garcia off waivers.
The Yankees, in search of bullpen reinforcements ahead of the July 31 trade deadline, are giving Rico Garcia a shot before exploring more aggressive options.
The 31-year-old right-hander signed a minor league deal with the Mets last November and began the year in Triple-A Syracuse, where he posted a 4.45 ERA across 24 appearances. He was called up on July 3 and impressed in limited action—tossing 4 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts over two games.
With no minor league options left, Garcia will now join both the Yankees’ 40-man and active rosters, prompting a corresponding move. Originally drafted by the Rockies in the 30th round out of Hawaii Pacific University in 2016, Garcia owns a 6.47 ERA with 24 strikeouts over 40 1/3 MLB innings.
