The New England Patriots were aggressive this offseason, adding talent on both offense and defense in an effort to rebuild what was arguably the NFL’s weakest roster in 2024.
However, they fell short when it came to fixing one of their biggest flaws: the wide receiver room.
New England had the league’s worst receiving corps last season, and with rookie quarterback Drake Maye now in the mix, strengthening that group should’ve been a priority.
The Patriots did make several moves — signing Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins, drafting Kyle Williams, and adding undrafted rookie Efton Chism III. But most of their hopes were pinned on Diggs, who’s recovering from a torn ACL and may not be ready for the start of the 2025 season.
With Diggs potentially landing on the PUP list to open the year, New England could be forced to rely on DeMario Douglas as its top receiver — a scenario that played out poorly last season.
There was optimism about the Patriots’ playoff hopes heading into training camp, but that confidence always came with caution. Now, those doubts are starting to feel justified.
Simply put, if Diggs isn’t available, the Patriots’ playoff chances take a serious hit. The team lacks proven weapons, making their decision to skip on a higher draft pick or trade for a receiver all the more questionable.
Yes, New England has a favorable schedule. But after back-to-back four-win seasons, they’re not in a position to feel secure — and their opponents won’t be circling the Pats as a tough matchup either, especially if Diggs remains out.
There’s still a window to add help before Week 1, but doing so this late in the offseason won’t be easy.
The bottom line: trouble is already brewing in New England — and training camp hasn’t even started.
