According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Oregon State is set to name redshirt junior quarterback Maalik Murphy as the top signal-caller on their initial two-deep depth chart for the August 30 season opener against California.
Murphy, a Duke transfer who committed to the Beavers in late December, has been the clear frontrunner during Spring and Fall camps, consistently practicing with the first-team offense. In recent media sessions, head coach Trent Bray and offensive coordinator Ryan Gunderson gave no hints of a quarterback battle, signaling that the highly touted former four-star recruit has outshined his competitors.
Before arriving in Corvallis, Murphy spent two seasons at Texas, mostly as a backup, playing in seven games with two starts. Last year at Duke, he started all 12 games, setting a program record for single-season touchdown passes.
The redshirt junior’s standout performance in Durham earned him spots on several preseason award watch lists, including the Unitas Golden Arm, Davey O’Brien, and Maxwell awards.
Murphy will lead Oregon State into their season opener against California at Reser Stadium on August 30 at 7:30 PM, broadcast on ESPN.
