The Philadelphia Eagles, fresh off their Super Bowl 59 victory, started this season as the team to beat, boasting a loaded roster on both offense and defense. However, their wins haven’t exactly been flashy.
On Sunday, the Eagles improved to 4-0 with a 31-23 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Their offense, though, managed only 200 yards on 58 plays. Jalen Hurts went 15-for-24, throwing for 130 yards and two touchdowns, with no receiver surpassing 40 yards.
Post-game, A.J. Brown shared a vague tweet suggesting frustration after a lackluster day. Targeted nine times, he caught just two passes for seven yards. This isn’t new for Brown, who’s voiced similar gripes before but stayed loyal, even shining in the playoffs.
Meanwhile, Saquon Barkley emphasized that team wins trump personal stats.
Saquon Barkley says he likes wins, not statistics after Eagles improve to 4-0
After the Eagles’ 31-23 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Saquon Barkley addressed the team’s modest offensive output of 200 yards. “I like winning football games and I don’t care what it looks like,” Barkley said, per Jeff Neiburg of The Inquirer. “Whether it’s me rushing for 20 yards or 200 yards, whatever it takes. I don’t care if the score is 6-3 or 36-4. We’re 4-0.” He cautioned, however, that the offense’s second-half struggles this week and first-half issues last week could make future wins tougher.
Barkley’s perspective is shaped by his time with the New York Giants, where big individual stats rarely translated to wins, except in 2022 when they reached the NFC Divisional Round. Now in his first year with the Eagles, fresh off a Super Bowl 59 title with eye-popping stats, he’s focused on team success.
The Eagles’ offense, now led by new coordinator Kevin Patullo after Kellen Moore’s departure to coach the New Orleans Saints, is averaging just 251.5 yards per game, a clear underperformance. Yet, their 27.0 points per game rank among the NFL’s best, showing they’re still finding the end zone. Barkley remains unfazed by the low yardage as long as the wins keep coming.
