NRL club, the Dolphins have added another international back to their future roster with the signing of exciting Wests Tigers youngster Junior Tupou.

Following links between St Helens and Salford Red Devils and the winger, the Saints are actively seeking an outside back due to the departure of Will Hopoate and the vacant number three shirt. Meanwhile, Salford is in the market for a winger following the reported loss of Joe Burgess due to a disciplinary incident and the departure of Ken Sio, opening up a quota spot.

However, the former Wests Tigers winger will not be joining either team. The signing of Tupou is a significant addition for the Dolphins as they build their squad in just their second year in the NRL.

The 21-year-old Tupou has committed to a three-year deal starting in the 2025 season, making him another notable acquisition in the backline. This comes after Great Britain centre Herbie Farnworth and former Bulldog Jake Averillo joined the club in the current pre-season.

Tupou, who made his memorable NRL debut for the Tigers last year at Suncorp Stadium, scored a try during Magic Round. He played 22 out of his 26 NRL games for the Tigers in 2023 and recently made his Test debut for Tonga in a three-Test series against England.

Dolphins’ chief executive Terry Reader expressed enthusiasm for Tupou’s signing, highlighting his strong running ability and the added depth he brings to the squad. Reader sees Tupou as one of the most exciting young backs in the NRL, and his powerful running style is expected to provide the Dolphins with added attacking potency.

In addition to his Test status for Tonga, Tupou, a New Zealand native, has represented both NSW under 16s and under 18s and spent some time with the Junior Wallabies during a brief stint in rugby union.
