Khaleke Hudson, known for his consistent contributions on special teams for Washington, seized a significant opportunity to showcase his defensive skills last season. This promising performance has paved the way for another opportunity elsewhere.

Amidst the Commanders’ restructuring under Dan Quinn’s leadership, which has seen several of Quinn’s former players join the team, Hudson has decided to pursue a chance with the Saints. According to NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo, New Orleans has signed the experienced linebacker to a one-year contract.

This move comes shortly after Hudson’s visit to the Steelers. Although it’s unclear if the Steelers, who already have another former Washington linebacker, Cole Holcomb, on their roster, made an offer, Hudson has ultimately chosen to join the NFC South. The Saints are acquiring a seasoned special-teamer who also contributed significantly with eight starts in 2023.

Hudson, aged 26 and a graduate of Michigan, had limited starting opportunities in his first three seasons, starting only four games. However, he was a key player on Washington’s special teams, consistently playing a significant percentage of snaps. It was only in the final season under the coaching tandem of Ron Rivera and Jack Del Rio that Hudson moved into the starting lineup. Despite joining a team struggling defensively, Hudson made notable contributions, tallying 74 tackles (including five for loss), a sack, and two pass breakups.

His performance earned him a mid-tier ranking of 51st overall among linebackers by Pro Football Focus. Following an injury to Jamin Davis, Hudson started the Commanders’ last five games, ending the season with an impressive three tackles for loss in Week 18.

While the Saints recently extended the contract of their veteran starter, Demario Davis, and added former Chiefs starter Willie Gay, Hudson’s role may initially be as a backup, especially with Pete Werner approaching the end of his contract. However, Hudson’s experience on special teams will undoubtedly strengthen New Orleans’ options in that phase of the game as they head into Dennis Allen’s third season as head coach.
