Auburn to Land Top Transfer Portal QB in Stunning Move

The transfer portal has been open since Monday, and although the Auburn Tigers have yet to make their first addition, it could happen soon.

With two quarterbacks, Hank Brown and Holden Geriner, entering the portal, securing at least one will be a key focus for head coach Hugh Freeze and his staff.

One quarterback Auburn has quickly targeted is former Duke Blue Devil Maalik Murphy. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound redshirt sophomore from Inglewood, Calif., played two seasons with the Texas Longhorns before transferring to Duke in 2024.

Murphy has now arrived in Auburn for his visit, according to Bryan Matthews of AuburnSports.com.

According to 247Sports, Maalik Murphy is a four-star transfer, currently ranked as the No. 16 player and the No. 3 quarterback in the portal.

In the 2024 season, Murphy completed 254 of 421 passes for 2,933 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He appeared in seven games for Texas, starting two, and helped lead the Longhorns to victories over BYU and Kansas State.

Murphy was a four-star recruit in the 2022 class, ranked as the No. 179 player nationally and the No. 12 quarterback, according to 247Sports.

Pete Nakos of On3 reports that the Miami Hurricanes are Auburn’s primary competition for Murphy’s services. Miami is seeking a replacement for Cam Ward, a Heisman Trophy finalist, who is expected to declare for the 2025 NFL Draft after Miami’s game against Iowa State in the PopTarts Bowl.
