“White Sox Strike Deal for Phillies’ Lefty, Part Ways with Shewmake!”
The Chicago White Sox have acquired left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for minor league right-hander Aaron Combs. To make room for Gilbert on their 40-man roster, the White Sox designated infielder Braden Shewmake for assignment. This move indicates the team’s focus on strengthening their pitching staff for the upcoming season.
Gilbert, known for his solid left-handed pitching, will compete for a spot in the White Sox’s starting rotation during Spring Training. If he doesn’t secure a starting role, he could serve in a long relief role, similar to how Michael Soroka was used last season. The White Sox’s rotation is mostly filled with right-handers, so Gilbert adds depth as a left-handed option. Along with Bryse Wilson, he will join a competitive group of pitchers, including Jonathan Cannon, Drew Thorpe, Davis Martin, Nick Nastrini, Sean Burke, and Ky Bush, vying for one of the five starting spots.
In 2023, Gilbert pitched only 8.1 innings for the Phillies, posting a 3.24 ERA with three strikeouts, two walks, and one home run allowed. While his MLB sample size is small, his performance shows promise. Gilbert’s career has been marked by inconsistency—he debuted with the Arizona Diamond backs in 2021, earning a no-hitter in his first start.
His rookie season was strong with a 3.15 ERA. However, his ERA increased to 5.24 in 2022 and 5.19 in 2023. Despite these struggles, Gilbert performed well in Triple-A, posting a 2.25 ERA in 40 innings over 31 appearances. His strong control (career 7.3% walk rate) is a strength, though he is not known for striking out many batters.
