Yankees Eyeing Trade for Ex-Red Sox All-Star to Replace Gleyber Torres
With the MLB season fast approaching, the New York Yankees are under pressure to address their roster, particularly after Gleyber Torres‘ departure. Despite being linked to infield options like Ha-Seong Kim, the Yankees failed to make a serious push, allowing the former Padres shortstop to sign with division rivals, the Tampa Bay Rays.

Kim’s two-year, $29 million contract with the Rays has frustrated many Yankees fans, especially since the Yankees had resources, including $15 million from the Rays for using George Steinbrenner Field due to damage at Tropicana Field.
However, a new opportunity has emerged. MLB insider Jim Bowden reported that the Padres may be looking to offload former Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who signed a massive 11-year, $280 million deal with San Diego in 2023. Despite being only two years into the deal, the Padres are reportedly eager to trade Bogaerts, whose contract is now seen as one of the worst in baseball.
The Padres are reportedly offering Bogaerts and one of their top prospects to any team willing to take on his remaining $225 million over the next nine years, a deal that extends through Bogaerts’ age-41 season. The Yankees now face the decision of whether to absorb this hefty contract in exchange for a player who could fill their infield gap and potentially provide a competitive edge over the Boston Red Sox, their division rivals.
If the Yankees are focused on winning now, they might take the deal, likely without giving up much in return, and even secure a top prospect. Plus, they’d have the added bonus of poaching a former Red Sox fan favorite.
